Parent Resources and Information
A Typical Day in Technology Every student comes to the big computer lab OR small computer lab, for 1 hour a week. Technology lessons focus on math, health, language arts, and social studies curriculum while integrating technology objectives. Lessons are planned collaboratively with each grade level to focus on what is being in the classroom.
Students start in the big computer lab for the lesson introduction and instructions (usually with another class from their grade). They then go to their computer (in the big or small lab) to log in with their unique ID code. Students complete their activity (usually independently, but sometimes in partners) and as a class, we save and hand in their work electronically. After the activity, there is typically an educational game to practice the skills being taught in the lesson. Students in grades 4 and 5 also complete a lesson in Type to Learn. Finally, students log out, push in their chairs, straighten the keyboard and mouse and review what we talked about that class period. |
How to Help Your Child with Technology Skills At Home Listening and following directions is a big part of technology class. Since students are learning about programs and how to use them, students need to be focused during instructions and demonstration. All directions are given verbally, shown visually, and repeated. For primary students (grades K-2)- being able to find the letters on the keyboard is helpful (and using the Shift key to make a capital letter) as well as basic mouse movement and being able to double click; For intermediate students (grades 3-5), practicing typing is always beneficial. There are many online typing websites. Check out the "STUDENTS" tab for online learning games.

Technology Q&A
Q: What do students learn about Internet safety in technology class?
A: All grades are instructed on Internet safety every year. They are taught to take an adult or to obtain permission when using the Internet. They are also told never to give out personal information- their name, address, phone number, school name/address, etc. If something makes them feel uncomfortable or confused, they need to tell an adult right away. Students are also instructed to never meet with anyone in person that you have met online.
Q: What is a SMARTBoard?
A: A SMARTBoard is an interactive whiteboard. The SMARTBoard connects to the computer and an LCD projector to show the computer image. You can then control the computer by touching the board for all applications. Your finger is now the mouse! You can write on the board in digital ink, prepare activities, and save them for later!
Both computer labs have a SMARTBoard hanging on the wall and we have two mobile SMARTBoards (one on each floor) that can be signed out and moved from classroom to classroom
Q: What are some ways I can help my child with technology in the summer?
A: Students in kindergarten through grade 4 will keep their computer logins, so randomly ask your child what their computer log in is. Keeping this code in their head will help make them feel more confident when they start the school year in the fall. If possible, have your student practice double clicking on the computer or simply review the term. You can also remind and have your child practice making capital letters, by using the Shift button, and simply finding letters on the keyboard to type their full name or a word that you give (or spell) for them. For students in grades 3-5, if you have purchased Type to Learn have your child complete one lesson a week. There are settings where you can make the levels more difficult if they have completed all of them or they can work in “Play and Practice.” There are also many typing websites available.
